I'm still on an emotional high from it. I can't even describe how I felt at 11 pm EST when Olbermann announced it on MSNBC. Once Ohio went "blue" I knew it was over and was I like a kid at Christmas time 300 million times over. And to think I watched it alone instead of at a friend's because I thought I'd be bad company since I'd be too nervous.

I'm still in a state of mild shock. It's tough to believe this country actually voted Obama in. It speaks to the growth of the country, the shedding of some long-held biases, and the inclusion of new, more open-minded, constituents.

I'm also very heartened by the reaction of people overseas. For too long we have treated the world as our own little playground, and have paid the price in respect and affection. I hope we can strike a new direction in foreign policy, one that doesn't think diplomacy means picking up shell casings after the firefight.

We all woke up in a different America today.

I'm stunned. Absolutely stunned.

I NEVER thought I would see a black president in my lifetime.

What a great day for us. What a great day for the world.

I don't know if I was in a fog, but that looked like the Powell I remembered from the early '90's. It was more effective and complete than the Washington Post endorsement, and as welcome as the Tribune's. If only I can get Lara Logan to have a drink with me, all should be well.

Well it will always be the "new" Yankee Stadium to me. My first game was 1957 and Whitey Ford on the mound. Enos "Country" slaughter played left field. Elston Howard was the regular catcher by then but it was a Sunday game after a Saturday night game so Yogi caught that day. Mantle, Richardson, Skowron, Bauer and Clete Boyer. I can't remember if Kubek played short or not. The opponent was the Athletics who would have been in last place if it wasn't for the Senators. Farewell old friend.

I will always regret the fact that I never followed the Orioles up to New York for a game. This goes on the top of my list of lost opportunities in Baseball.

#1 Visit Yankee Stadium
#2 Visit Tiger Stadium
#3 Visit Cleveland Stadium

Hope all is well.

I can confirm that he did in fact say this. I disagreed, only because McCain is stubborn and removing her for any reason other than illness or something blameless like that just opens up the door too wide for competency attacks.

Would Pawlenty get the base as fired up? He may but who knows. I agree that the GOP will get Alaska's 3 EVs regardless, but I doubt Pawlenty will deliver Minnesota for McCain.

I just finished reading about the kid a few hours ago. This is looking worse and worse for them. There are two things that can happen. She can withdraw (voluntarily or be forced off) or stay on. The former, if done as quickly as possible, allows the party to do the appropriate damage control in plenty of time for the general. The latter will give plenty of ammo to the Democrats, especially as the excuses that are being made for her (Alaska's proximity to Russia, for example) become even more ludicrous.

Lack of foreign policy experience is one thing. Lack of foreign policy awareness is another.

Pawlenty is the best choice to replace her, which shows you just how screwed they are because he looks so much better in comparison. Carrying the state doesn't mean anything. They were going to win Alaska's paltry electoral votes regardless. What's more important to them is that it brings out the base nationwide.

Here's the magical question: if she ends up being removed from the ticket, who steps onto the McCain Express? It can't be Lieberman, the right would revolt. It won't be Romney. As much of a pompous, know it all, plastic asshat as he is, stupid he is not. He's not going to join a likely losing ticket. It won't be Jindal, he's tied up in his own state right now and could be for weeks (we're all thinking of everyone on the Gulf coast). Pawlenty would probably get over being an afterthought, but word I hear is he still can't make Minnesota competitive so that would hurt him. Even as more rumors come out (i.e. one that her 5th child was actually her 16 year old daughter's who was pulled out of school because of "mono") McCain may be stuck with Palin.

Some of the lesser-known tunes from the Shaft soundtrack are some of my favorites - especially for relaxation. "Early Sunday Morning", "A Friend's Place", "Bumpy's Rules", etc.

I'm with Mike in re: Steely Dan.

I understand the reasons why people like them, but whatever those reasons are, they just don't break through the layer of pretension that rests atop their work like the layer of clear gelatin on a canned ham.

Great show by all three of you.

:)

P.S. Nice choice on the Splitsville track. If your listeners are interested, Brandt Huseman is also playing in another band called The Pale Stars. Power Pop with a healthy dose of Americana.

Bill-DC: I sit next to a woman who leaves her cell phone on constantly. Last week, she went to a five-hour meeting where she left not one, but two phones ringing. Someone left a message and the damn things beeped every few minutes. I turned them off, but I let her know that they were off in case she needed to get her messages. She didn't apologize but shrugged it off.

She also talks on speakerphone constantly, when she's not shouting the latest details of her personal life to the entire floor. I'm working at home more often to keep my sanity.

The day I leave this job for good, I'm buying the most obnoxious ringtones I can find (Macarena, anyone? I already have Step by Step by New Kids on the Block.) and I'm putting my cell in a locked cabinet and calling myself every few minutes.

Here's one for your weekly Last Angry Man series! The other day I was in the supermarket and reached to get a bottle of milk. Apparently I came too close to this guy's father and while Mr. Corageous was walking away, he said loud and clear, "oh you must be from NY - everyone's very rude there." I answered, "no, I come from the same home town as you."

I have a whole load of these wonderful things. Living in Florida promotes rudeness not by New Yorkers but by others, young and old. I wish I would have thought to say to him, In New York, when we have something to say, we say it to your face.

Nice Dave! Here is what bugs the hell out of me:

The a-hole stopped in front of me at a red light and he's using his phone either talking or texting. The light turns green and the bastard is still there texting or talking. I don't like to use my horn a lot but I get great pleasure honking at these jerks and watching their reaction.

Ken: [looking at a surreal Bosch painting] It's Judgment Day, you know?
Ray: No. What's that then?
Ken: Well, it's, you know, the final day on Earth, when mankind will be judged for the crimes they've committed and that.
Ray: Oh. And see who gets into heaven and who gets into hell and all that.
Ken: Yeah. And what's the other place?
Ray: Purgatory.
Ken: Purgatory....what's that?
Ray: Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
[pause]
Ray: Do you believe in all that stuff, Ken?
Ken: About Tottenham?

I was stunned at Carlin's passing so I honored him at DCU's golf outing by using those seven words each time my ball missed the green or ended up in the woods. RIP George.

Or to something she detected in the ether: Argon, for example, or another of the noble gases. Did she looked like a retired bio-chemist? Remember, these elderly scientists often carry untapped retained information for many years, even when in the early stages of dementia. Do be kind towards the aged infirm; she may have been trying to recall the Periodic Table as some sort of mental agility exercise. Greetings from the Thames Valley, mrs Pouncer

No, that didn't get mentioned. I did, however, say that it looked like Halloween at the world's worst gay nightclub.

Eyes Wide Shut might have been overlong (I don't know. I didn't see it), but it did have one of my favorite Chris Isaak songs, and is therefore superior to Self Control on principle.

For years now I've been wondering if anyone else ever noticed that the video for Laura Brannigan’s sexy “Self Control” record has virtually the same plot as Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut?

Only the video does in less than five minutes what the great visionary needed two and a half hours to accomplish.

Sorry if you covered this in the show (I admit I didn't listen).

Sorry about the broken hyperlink above.

Another great comment in the show was that Phil Collins and Huey Lewis were guys one would like to share a beer with. Well, one of the many visiting critics at my architecture school was an architect in Austin who was Huey Lewis' cousin. He was a fun guy, and if the family was similar I would bet Huey was definitely a guy you could have a laugh with.

Great show. Awesome concept. Regarding the banned Duran Duran video, it was in fact Girls on Film and it was because of nudity. I know this because at a church sleepover someone had the [a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duran_Duran_(1983_video)">videodisc collection of Duran Duran's videos and we watched the banned video in the church basement. Much to the chagrin of the parent who purchased it, the full length uncensored version was on the videodisc. I shit you not.

I worked for him as a 17 year old kid -- the same age my son is today. Raised money and the like. I was studying for a final at about 12 on the East Coast. I was also listening to the radio when I heard his victory speech and then its awful aftermath. Took the test the next day in a fog. the following day I went to NYC at 6 in the morning and stood in line until about 2 before I passed his casket at Saint Patrick's. Then my buddies, my mom and my kid sister went down to Elizabeth to watch his train go by heading for Arlington Cemetary. We'll not see his like again. RIP Bobby

There's a lot I like about Levin, but he's also fought back a lot of environmental legislation that would put more pressure on the automobile industry. Being from Michigan, that just makes him a good representative of his constituents, but it's not what we need at this point.

I’m watched the proceedings on CNN. Senator Carl Levin of Michigan, who currently supports neither Democratic candidate, is the virtuous embodiment of the notion of “fair and balanced” that Fox News so shamelessly sullies.

Levin belongs on the Supreme Court, and if Clinton insists on a divisive floor fight at the convention then maybe Levin should run for the top job if the delegates cast their first round votes and the nomination remains unresolved.

That's what I was going to say!

I was also thinking of the Gone With The Wind sendup from the Carol Burnett show (maybe it was on one of your clips, Dave, but I can't play those on my machine), plus all of the other great scenes from Mel Brooks movies - like the one in High Anxiety where he becomes a fight referee. So many great moments.

RIP Jimmy McGriff, also.

So now that Celine is gone does that mean that gag-inducing Titanic number will be retired? (but then does it also mean a Cher or Bette Midler number will be added?) God help us if it's Half Breed and Wind Beneath My Wings!

Republican strategists want Obama? Did you even read the article I linked to?

"Clinton has a new reason to stay in the race -- President Bush's former chief strategist. 'Just today . . . one of the TV networks released an analysis by, of all people, Karl Rove, saying I am the stronger candidate,' she says of research by Rove's firm showing Clinton doing better than Obama against McCain, based on the averaging of state opinion polls."

This is to say nothing of the Tennessee GOP's smears against Obama and his wife, the Rev. Wright and Hussein controversies (he's a Muslim, but has a Christian preacher?), lapel pins, and the incredibly insipid "elitist" tag. Oh wait, that last one was started by Hillary.

Of all the arguments one can have as to why Hillary Clinton should be President, and there are many valid ones, yours may be the dumbest.

And that's why I'm not deleting it.

DEFEAT REPUBLICAN’S PERVERSE STRATEGY

Please, do not let the Democratic presidential candidate, ideal for the Republicans strategy, win the primary election. Do not facilitate the triumph of the Republican strategists that, in collusion with their media arm, disparage Hillary’s candidacy on a daily basis while at the same time praise Obama’s, with the nefarious objective of getting his nomination and in consequence securing the White House for one more period. Republicans are convinced that McCain will defeat Obama.

This perverse strategy is based on the assumption that the social pathology of racism, as a human factor, affects the decision making process of electing a USA President between a black candidate and a white one. It is sad but necessary to realistically process this proposition in order to eradicate from the political arena, once and for all, this Maquiavelic behavior. At the same time we'll impede four more years of economic, social, and moral deterioration of our beloved country.

We do not have anything against Obama; in fact we despise the maquiavelic strategists using him as a guinea pig. It is condemnable, though not illegal and to some extend understandable. What we cannot understand nonetheless, are the reasons behind the Democrats endorsing Obama knowing full well that he is not going to be elected. We wonder what’s behind these nonsensical actions.

HILLARY FOR PRESIDENT!!!!

SI SE PUEDE!!!!

What about the anti-hero as hero from the 1930s era mafias that were glorified in Hollywood films years afterwards? I'm sure there are other similar examples maybe prior to the 1930s. The anti-hero as a hero is as old as time immemorial.

Despite Bissinger's sandpaper delivery it's easy to understand his perspective. I don't think it's so much about protecting the veil surrounding the athlete, since newspapers remove that on their own when news stories are printed about paternity lawsuits and things of that ilke. I think Bissinger is more concerned with a certain kind of swarmy delivery with which satire or even sarcasm can descend into appealing only to the lowest common denominator.

I assume most sports blog writers still read newspapers or newspaper writers online for information. It's that part of the equation that I think kind of flew over Bissinger's head when he attacked Leitch. That part also goes to what Leitch was saying about the two complimenting one another.

We've gotten Celine a lot, too. It's too bad the song is so horrid, because it's one of the most beautiful shows they do in terms of the "choreography." Your Song by Elton John and Viva Las Vegas are also beautifully done, too. I'll upload those when I can find them.

I have been to Las Vegas twice. I went with my wife in 2006 and we got Celine's Titanic song at the fountains. I went by myself in 2007 and got Luck be a Lady.

FWIW, I love Sancious. NYC Serenade and Incident On 57th Street would not have been the same without him. He's still around. In the 80s, he played with Peter Gabriel, then moved on to Sting. I don't know if he's still with him.

Random comment: does David Sancious (sp?) ever get any love from the Springsteen faithful? Back when I was a BS fanboy, I bought his solo album, which was very serviceable jazz-fusion back in the day. Haven't heard a peep about him since, but he was clearly a capable keyboard player for the likes of BS. -Pete

Good stuff. The more I read and think about this, the more I wonder why Will didn't just look at Bissinger and say, "we're talking about sports, for God's sake!"

The rest of us realize the athletes are flawed humans - sometimes tragically so as you say - and have given up idolizing these guys and taking a closer look at things. Personally, I think I'm better for it.

Hey, Shuler was crap with the Saints too.

I'm glad to read on the WaPo online (or was it CNN) that Obama is going to a rally in Charleston, WV. Even if he gets routed on Tuesday, IMHO it would be a very big mistake going forward to not visit the state, at least for a few hours. Looking to the fall, while it's been a GOP state recently, I believe Democrats are still the majority party in terms of registration by quite a bit. By going there, he's telling them that he's looking out for them no matter how much he may lose there.

It was boston.com where I first saw him with a superdelegate lead.
