Double Dynamite!
It’s Pledge Drive time at my local PBS station, and that means only one thing: breaking out the A-list material. So in between the nightly showings of Roy Orbison’s Black And White Night (which never gets old), they’ve added the Stax/Volt Revue Live In Norway 1967 to their repertoire. If it’s showing on your station, set the TiVo because it’s a keeper.
But despite my love of all things Stax, I don’t think I had seen video of Sam & Dave onstage before this. But this clip from that concert shows off how they worked off, and against, each other to remarkable effect. That Otis Redding could not only follow, but outdo them was a wonder in itself.
And the story of how Hold On, I’m Coming is one of the greatest I’ve ever heard. Apparently, Isaac Hayes was trying to get his songwriting partner David Porter out of the Stax bathroom so that they could continue with the session. Porter yelled out “Hold on, man, I’m coming” and a soul classic was born.
