What Were They Thinking?
Every once in a while I come across a video so inspiring that it changes the way I view the world.
This, however, is not one of them.
If you thought the famous Bing Crosby/David Bowie version of “The Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth” was bizarre (and make no mistake, it was), it’s nothing compared to what Bing did nine years earlier. From 1968, here’s Bing with The Supremes and Jose Feliciano (?) singing an eight-minute medley of the hits of the day. While Diana acquits herself nicely on the Dionne Warwick songs, it loses the plot somewhere around the time Bing takes a shot at Eleanor Rigby (the 1:27 mark). Meanwhile, Feliciano is wondering how the hell he got there.
Any time you hear somebody complain that “variety is dead,” simply show them this clip and maybe they’ll understand why that’s not a negative.
