Sock It To Me!

In my review of The Gaslight Anthem show, I wrote that I had seen two concerts that weekend. The other was the Eccentric Soul Revue, which was put on by Numero Group, a celebrated label that specializes in cratedigging and reissues.

The concert, which took place at Park West, featured a handful of musicians from the Twinight label, including The Notations and Syl Johnson, who later recorded for Willie Mitchell’s Hi Records. The backing band was JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound, which featured some of the finest retro soul I’ve heard outside of Bushwick. Brooks also served as the MC for the evening. The whole night was about 2.5 hours of great soul music and the evening finished up with all the performers singing Curtis Mayfield’s classic Move On Up.

I heard about the concert from Heather of the I Am Fuel, You Are Friends blog, which is my favorite music blogs. She wrote up a review of the show which renders anything I could say about the night redundant, and also included some pictures.
