Passover

I’m hardly what anybody would call the world’s most observant Jew these days, but my Hebraic heart was filled with joy this morning when I saw this little piece of news.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is inviting close friends and staff to a private White House meal Thursday to mark Passover, a signal that the new president intends to fulfill his promise that Jewish voters would have an ally.

White House aides say they believe this is the first president-hosted seder at the White House. President Bill Clinton’s aides planned seders, but Clinton isn’t known to have attended.

I was surprised to see that it was the first. I would have thought that somebody would have thought to do it.

A little while ago, the White House released an official photo of the Seder, which confirmed something I had suspected.

It would appear that Sasha Obama is the youngest at the table, which means that it was her duty to ask the Four Questions. The idea of that adorable young girl going through the same embarrasing ritual that I had to endure (well into my teens) put a smile on my face all day long.

What’s the fourth question? I know the first three are:

    What is your name?
    What is your quest?
    What is your favorite color?

Rahm Emanuel couldn’t be bothered to attend the seder at the White House???

Neither he nor David Axelrod, who’s also Jewish, were there. The spokesperson said that Axelrod was with his family, but made no mention of Rahm’s whereabouts.

And when you think about it, Rahm probably wouldn’t be able to attend. I would gather he keeps strict Kosher For Passover – getting rid of all the bread and stuff – Since the meal was prepared in the White House kitchen, I can’t imagine they did that.

Besides, would you really want Rahm at your Seder if you had two young daughters around?
