Episode 52: Chart Attack With Popdose

Episode 52, in which Jeff and I continue our exploration of the depths of Jason’s musical pathology, only to come to the sad conclusion that it’s his mother’s fault. I think this one came out better than their first appearance, which is saying something. Sadly, the music doesn’t improve that much. But at least there’s not as much of it.

But take a listen to our take on the Top Ten singles of June 9, 1984, as we discuss the unfortunate impact of cocaine, legendary songwriter Dean Pitchford, and Ruth Pointer’s Adam’s apple. And when you’re done, be sure to add Popdose to your RSS aggregator.

As always, you can download the episode (1:17:19, 70.7 MB) by right-clicking here and selecting “Save Target As…” or by subscribing using the buttons on the right.

Wow, YouTube is being really harsh in taking down videos.

Great show. Awesome concept. Regarding the banned Duran Duran video, it was in fact Girls on Film and it was because of nudity. I know this because at a church sleepover someone had the [a href=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duran_Duran_(1983_video)”>videodisc collection of Duran Duran’s videos and we watched the banned video in the church basement. Much to the chagrin of the parent who purchased it, the full length uncensored version was on the videodisc. I shit you not.

Sorry about the broken hyperlink above.

Another great comment in the show was that Phil Collins and Huey Lewis were guys one would like to share a beer with. Well, one of the many visiting critics at my architecture school was an architect in Austin who was Huey Lewis’ cousin. He was a fun guy, and if the family was similar I would bet Huey was definitely a guy you could have a laugh with.

  5. For years now I’ve been wondering if anyone else ever noticed that the video for Laura Brannigan’s sexy “Self Control” record has virtually the same plot as Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut?

Only the video does in less than five minutes what the great visionary needed two and a half hours to accomplish.

Sorry if you covered this in the show (I admit I didn’t listen).

No, that didn’t get mentioned. I did, however, say that it looked like Halloween at the world’s worst gay nightclub.

Eyes Wide Shut might have been overlong (I don’t know. I didn’t see it), but it did have one of my favorite Chris Isaak songs, and is therefore superior to Self Control on principle.
