Episode 45: Guilty Pleasures With Popdose

About 18 months ago, Sound Opinions did a show about guilty pleasures. It was entertaining, but they hardly put themselves out there. I mean, “Sweet Caroline?” That’s a great pop song, and there’s no reason why it shouldn’t always be acknowledged as such. Then again, Jim declaring his love for “My Humps” helped me understand his Springsteen hatred, and I’ve come to the conclusion that he’s simply an idiot.

Even after Jason and Jeff from Popdose had agreed to appear on the show, I wasn’t sure what the topic should be, and then it hit me that we should air our guilty pleasures. After all, they’re the guys behind Mellow Gold, Cutouts Gone Wild, and Chartburn. They live to talk about crap!

But what did we learn from this? We discovered that a) nothing is more important than melody; b); music from our childhood will always have a hold on us and shape our tastes, no matter how lousy or just plain un-hip they may be; and c) we possibly owe Jason’s entire existence to a Starland Vocal Band concert and some Quaaludes.

Editing this was tougher than most episodes, not only because there was so much good material form Jason and Jeff, but also because I actually had to determine which parts of the songs were best/worst to use as examples. As a result, I’ve become more familiar with “Even The Nights Are Better” than I ever wanted to be.

As I read this I am listening to Iggy and the Stooges out-takes and demos. Perhaps I’ll come back for a listen when I am in a different frame of mind.

Jack Wagner – good christ. Our bus broke down on the way back from Toronto on a High School band trip and my friend Guy has the harrowing story of being awakened from a fitful sleep by the wailings of “All I Need.” I think he still has flashbacks.

Great show again. Air Supply is definitely one of my guilty pleasures. I blame it on the suburban pre-teen disco that was Skateland in Overland Park, Kansas.
