Our Long National Nightmare Is Over

So long, prick. Thanks for nothing. This was your best chance, and you blew it.

And I still mean every word I wrote on this subject last year.

Great decision by the Yanks. He behaved like a spoiled brat during his time with the Yanks. I can’t see any club laying out $30 million a year for this guy.

  2. dslifton says:

It was his decision, not the Yanks. They were prepared to offer him even more money than he’s getting now.

Let the bidding war begin for Lowell…

And super classy move by him and Borass to announce it during a World Series game. I will be pissed of he ends up here – go join Lou with the Cubs ass-rod

  4. Bill-DC says:

The Yanks said they were not going to pursue him if he opts out, right? They would have lost the $ the Rangers were paying should they have signed him after he opted out. Maybe I have it all wrong, I don’t know.

I can’t see him going to Boston. I think a West Coast team (Angels or Giants) get him.

I hope he learned he needs to keep his mouth shut and stop being a whiner. Great player but high maintenance.

  5. dslifton says:

Yeah, you’ve got that right about the contract.

He’s beyond high maintenance. He’s a trophy wife who always has a headache when you absolutely, positively need a blowjob.

I needed a great laugh to end this Monday on and that did it. Thanks Dave!

Saw this on the Terps Sports Board. You and Keith may have seen it but it is about the Don Mattingly jinx.

1976-1981: Yankees in World Series 4 times, winning 2
1981: Yankees in World Series (lose to Dodgers)

1982-1995: Mattingly plays for Yankees. No World Series appearances.

    1996: Yankees win World Series
1996-2003: Yankees appear in World Series 6 times, winning 4
2003: Yankees in World Series (lose to Marlins)

2004-2007: Mattingly is Yankees hitting coach. No World Series appearances.

So, since 1976, the Yankees world Series appearances are as follows:

Without Mattingly as a player or coach, 10 times in 14 years, and always in the years directly before or after Mattingly.

With Mattingly as a player or coach, 0 times in 17 years (no WS in 1994)

BTW, Joe Girardi played for the Yankees for 4 years (1996-1999), when they won the World Series 3 times.

Nothing against Mattingly as a player or coach, and it could just be bad luck, but perhaps the Yankees didn’t want to pin their fortunes on a guy who has never been to a World Series.

  8. dslifton says:

That’s not it at all. Girardi was being groomed as Torre’s replacement when he coached there. The problem was that Torre never left, so Girardi took the first opportunity he could to get some managerial experience.

Much as I love Mattingly, let’s face it. If you were Steinbrenner, would you trust the job of rebuilding a team like the Yankees to a guy with no managerial experience?

Then again, the Terps Boards are loaded with UM grads, so I wouldn’t expect them to understand anything.

He grew up a Mets fan. Just sayin’…

And a former Con Ed Kid is managing them right now…
