“How Can I Explain Away/All The Things I Haven’t Done…”
I didn’t use this song in the podcast, because I wanted to save it for today’s Song I Never Get Tired Of. Continuing with Bob Mould Week, here’s Sugar and “If I Can’t Change Your Mind.”

If there was ever a genre of bubblegrunge, this is its “Stairway To Heaven.” The main riff is essentially “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” and lyrically, it’s a fairly straightforward I-Don’t-Want-You-To-Go song, but it hits so hard, even with the acoustic, that it has to be considered as alternative.
I love the harmonies here, and I think they set the song over the top. They’re very David Crosby-ish, where he doesn’t stay on a third or a fifth, but instead he finds a harmony that can stand alone as a melody.
I also really like the bridge, especially the “Then when you return/When will you return” line, and the chord progression that Mould uses to get back to the main riff.
Here’s the version from Circle Of Friends.
