“I Close My Eyes For A Second And Pretend It’s Me You Want…”

This week’s SINGTO is Jackie DeShannon singing her self-penned hit “When You Walk In The Room” on Hullaballoo probably in 1964.  Admittedly, I prefer The Searchers’ version, and I’ve got a version of Springsteen doing this in ‘75 that slays them all, but I could only find newer versions of The Searchers doing it, and their voices aren’t as good as on the original.  But DeShannon’s performance/lip-synch is strong, and I love her winks to the camera.  You also have to love the Spectoresque production by Jack Nietzche.  I’m just glad I got to post this before Mike and the gang at Power Pop could get to it.

Have you heard Paul Carrack’s cover?

Yeah. It was linked through the live Cruel To Be Kind video that I posted last week. That put me in the mood to search for the original. I didn’t particularly care for his version. It took all the pop out of it.
