Tuesday Morning Links – Bar Mitzvah Edition

Today is the 25th anniversary of my Bar Mitzvah.  Thankfully I don’t have any scanned pictures or else I’d be tempted to post them, and you see me with even dorkier glasses than I have now.  For those of you who didn’t grow up with Jewish friends, you might not know that much about the ancient ritual outside of something seen on TV somewhere.  So, I’m dedicating today’s TML to the day filled with kvelling, kvetching, and the wonder that is the Viennese Table.

And please, hold your applause until the very last link is given.

Judaism 101 answers any basic questions you may have about Bar and Bat Mitzvahs.

Bar Mitzvah Disco is a book that collects stories and pictures from suburban Bar Mitzvahs from the late-60s through the 1980, and features essays from notable Jewish writers.  It gets all the details right, including the Foreword from The Village People.  Check out the sample pages for Sarah Silverman’s Bat Mitzvah picture.

In 1999, the rock band Cake launched their tour by playing a Bar Mitzvah in South Florida.

On the blog for The Strip Podcast, Steve describes a recent story of a disgustingly ostentatious Vegas Bat Mitzvah, and admits that his own wasn’t much better.

And that’s still nothing compared to the disgraceful $10 million party from 2005 known as Miztvahpalooza.

Finally, a moving story about a man who waited 63 years to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah.

Great collection of sites. Congratulations on a quarter century as a man (at least nominally).

Yeah, I think I’m even less mature now than I was then. Cue Dylan via The Byrds for more info…

I know a few people who can help you out with several hundred photos of not only dorky YOU (but you were so handsome nonetheless) but the rest of the happy and hungry folks as well. Let me know your decision as soon as you get off the floor. In fact, if you don’t behave, we will post it ourselves.

    Always anxious to please.
