Movin’ On
When I leave my office this evening, I’ll be unemployed.
After seven years at this place, I gave my notice last month because I’m tired of being an office grunt. I had originally planned on leaving this past spring, but a surge in turnover caused me to delay those plans. The company has treated me well, so out of loyalty, I stayed to help the newer people learn our way of doing things. But with recent developments here about to make things even more unstable, I decided to leave now rather than deal with them and drive myself crazy.
In making this decision, I tried to think about what to do next, and I came to the conclusion that, as long as I was in an office environment, at some point or another I would wind up burned out like I am now. So I’m going to strike out on my own and become a freelance writer.
Over the past two months I’ve been gathering information on how to do this, and I think it’s possible. I believe I have the talent – one of the reasons why I started this blog last year was to get myself more experience in writing. That led to both the SE and the WFW Podcasts, both of which have also been beneficial to me in different styles.
Those of you who are close to me already know about this, and I thank you for all your support and help over the past few months. I will miss many of the people at my old job, as well as the many excellent restaurants in Bethesda, several of which may close as a result of my decision, but it’s for the best.
Tonight, Kim and I are flying to Rhode Island to spend New Years with her family. We will return on Monday, at which point I will begin my new career as a freelancer. If you need a writer, or are a writer and have too much to handle, please contact me for more information.
Thank you, and Happy New Year!

Dave, with your talents, I think you are making the right move. I can really relate to leaving a dead end job, I’ve certainly had my share of them! Please don’t give up the blog and podcast! Wishing you all the best that life has to offer; remember: there are no coincedences!
Dylan said it best “One should never be where one does not belong….”
I agree with Mike. You’re future is free lance. While there will be difficult times ahead as you get this going, you will do fine. I still can’t say enough about the incredible work you have done for us United fans with the Podcast and “Looking Back” features you did.
Best of luck, my friend. 2007 will be better than 2006.
Good luck Dave — I admire the courage you’re displaying to strike out on your own (though I hope you don’t actually “strike out”). Quite the New Year’s Resolution!
Thanks, everybody. It means a lot to me.
Good luck with the writing.
The pay sucks though
But at least it is rewarding.
Give ‘em hell, Dave.
