How Did I Just Discover This?

Apparently Del Amitri did the theme song for Scotland’s 1998 World Cup team. YouTube embedding has been disabled by their label (yeah, because you wouldn’t want to let their millions of fans talk about it, right?), but you can watch it here (with a special guest appearance by Colin Hendry’s mullet!).

I don’t know if it was intentional, but it serves as a hysterical contrast to the famous Nike Brazil ad from the same year. The two teams were in the same group (Brazil beat Scotland 2-1 in the opening game of the tournament on an own goal), so I can understand Justin Currie and co. making fun of the differences between Brazil’s jogo bonito and Scotland’s miserable England-lite style.

As for the song, I love the idea of a Scot singing, essentially, “Guys, we don’t expect much, but just don’t embarrass us in front of the whole world.” It’s hardly the rah-rah sentiments of New Order’s World In Motion, and, as a case of addition by subtraction, doesn’t feature John Barnes rapping, which is almost as embarrassing as the current state of Scottish soccer.
